Brooks City Overview (Go to the Brooks Sport Hotels Section)

Brooks Alberta is located just two hours east of Calgary on the TransCanada Highway; one hour west of Medicine Hat; or one and a half hours from Lethbridge on Highway #36.

Bounded on the north by the Red Deer River and on the south by the Bow River, the area surrounding Brooks is known for great fishing and sites to see include: the Brooks Aqueduct, a National/Provincial historical site; the Crop Diversification Centre South, a research centre that supports the horticultural industry; Brooks and District Museum, representing life in this area from 1900 to 1950; Lake Newell, one of the country's largest man made lakes; and Dinosaur Park, a World Heritage Site and home of the field station of the Royal Tyrrell Museum.

Brooks Alberta operates as the retail and service sector for both the Town of Brooks and the surrounding region servicing approximately 25,000 people. As a regional service centre, Brooks has a wide range of urban amenities and retail services such as an enclosed shopping mall, a large number of hotels and motels - restaurants, recreational facilities, representation from all five major banks and professional, technical and financial services.

Brooks Alberta is a town of 9,000 in the middle of a near-desert climate with a shortgrass prairie environment called the "Palliser Triangle". This region is suitable for ranching but not for farming. Early settlers built a irrigation aqueduct that in 1915, was then one of the largest concrete structures in the world, spanning 3 km of prairie. Brooks is also a center for oil & gas production, with 26,000 wells in the area. South of town, Lake Newell is the focal point of the areašs recreation, providing sailing, windsurfing, fishing, hunting, and camping. Kinbrook Provincial Park is on the eastern shore of the lake.

Annual events include: Kiwanis Ice Derby at Lake Newell (February), The Gather-a big sale of 10,000 cattle (March), Annual Trade Show (April), Little Britches Rodeo (June), Brooks Kinsmen Rodeo (June), Eastern Irrigation Ag. Society Fall Fair (August), Pheasant Festival Week (October).

Brooks Alberta has great opportunities for sport tournaments of all kinds. Sport tourism is a part of Brooks.
